Pain Awareness Month began as a pain awareness campaign established by the American Chronic Pain Association, or ACPA, in 2001. The goal of this campaign was to raise awareness for chronic pain conditions through mass media and forums and to erase stigma attached to the various disorders.
This early campaigning brought together the Partners for Understanding Pain, a group that aimed to bring chronic pain disorders to the attention of health care professionals, legisators, business professionals, and the community as a whole. Establishing September as Pain Awareness Month was one of their primary goals.
Since its formation in 2001, Partners for Understanding Pain has succeeded in raising community awareness for chronic pain and has lobbied for support from their local representatives on several important bills, including the National Pain Care Policy Act of 2005. Their community awareness efforts continue this year with Pain Awareness Month 2011.
